~1947~
Virgil Murray, a World War II veteran who flew 51 combat missions over Europe in B-17s and later transferred to the far east as a B-29 commander, left active-duty military to start his new career as a coconut buyer for Peter Paul Philippines while stationed there at the end of the war. “You gotta be willing to take a chance,” he said. “I knew I could make more in the coconut business in the long run than I could in the Air Force. I knew I could do it.”
~1948-1977~
Over the years, Virgil traveled the world buying, selling, and processing coconuts, and held positions as the CEO in three different companies. In 1977, he decided to leave his position to develop and operate his own company near his hometown. Virmurco Inc., based in Seville, Ohio, began importing coconut to the United States.
~1985~
Virgil’s dream of sharing his love of coconut and the island life was born when Island Delights Candies was created in 1985. Their signature Coconut Haystacks put them on the map, and a new manufacturing facility was built in Seville, Ohio in the early 2000s.
~Today~
Still family owned and operated, we believe in tradition. At Island Delights Candies, we continue to make nostalgic confections the same way as generations before us, taking you back to simpler times.
